Worm testing in goats and sheep

Only deworm when necessary

WORM RESEARCH AT WORM&CO

Worm&Co is the company specialized in worm research in goats and sheep. Research has shown that many animals are unnecessarily dewormed. This is harmful to your animal’s health and accelerates the development of worm resistance. To prevent resistance, it is important to first perform worm research before deworming.

Why worm research?

It is important to carry out worm analysis frequently (4 times per year). This way, you build a clear record and gain insight into your sheep’s or goat’s susceptibility to worms. In addition, it helps you keep control over your worm management. On this page, you will find tips to keep worm management optimal, prevent worm infections, and reduce infection pressure.

Enter details

On the container you received, there is a label.

Please fill in your email address, the date of stool collection, and the name and age of your sheep or goat.

Address label

Before you continue: place the enclosed return label over the address label on the front of the seal bag.

It is easiest to do this before you fill the bag with the stool sample.

Bag

Inside the container is a bag. Use this bag to collect fresh stool. Place the bag over your hand so that the stool ends up inside the bag. Close the bag tightly, but do not tie a knot in it.

Closing the bag

Place the bag with the stool back into the container and close it securely.

If the container won’t close, it means it’s too full.

Return bag

Place the container in the return bag and press the sealing strip firmly closed.

If you ordered with postage included, you can simply drop the return envelope in the mailbox. If you ordered without postage, you will need to add stamps yourself before sending it back.

Result

You will receive the result in your mailbox within 24 hours after the laboratory has received the stool sample.

The result can also be easily viewed on the account page of our website!

Working preventively

Prevention is always better than cure. To prevent a worm infection, it is therefore very important to work preventively. Goats and sheep defecate in the pasture, and their manure contains worm eggs from which larvae hatch. These larvae settle on the tips of the grass and are eaten by the animals, causing infection. That is why one of the most important tasks in preventing infection is removing the manure from the pasture. To work as effectively as possible in preventing worms, it is wise to follow the 9 tips below:

  • Remove droppings from the pasture at least twice a week.
  • Rotate the goats and sheep every 2–3 weeks to a clean piece of land.
  • Before moving goats and sheep to fresh pasture, it’s wise to carry out a worm examination. This way you ensure the new field does not get contaminated.
  • Apply good hygiene practices. Keep stables, pastures, and water troughs clean.
  • Do not place your animals’ feed on the ground in the stable. This reduces the risk of contact with contaminated droppings.
  • Keep the stocking density of your pasture low so that the animals can graze around their own droppings.
  • Mow your pasture at least once a year to reduce infection pressure.
  • Carry out worm examinations regularly (4 times a year) so infections can be detected in time.
