MANURE RESEARCH AT WORM&CO

Worm&Co is the company specialized in manure research for horses. Studies have shown that 74 percent of horses are dewormed unnecessarily. This harms your horse’s health and accelerates the development of worm resistance. To prevent resistance, it is important to perform manure research before deworming.

Why manure research?

It is important to carry out manure analysis frequently (4 times per year). This way, you build a clear record and gain insight into your horse’s susceptibility to worms. In addition, it helps you keep control over your worm management. On this page, you will find tips to keep worm management optimal, prevent worm infections, and reduce infection pressure.

The manure container you received has a label on it.

Please enter your email address, the date of manure collection, and your horse's name and age.

Address label

Before you continue: stick the included return label over the address label on the front of the seal bag.

It is easier to do this before filling the bag with the manure sample.

Bag

Inside the manure container is a bag. Use this bag to pick up one fresh manure ball. Place the bag over your hand so the manure ends up inside the bag. Twist the bag tightly closed, but do not tie a knot in it.

Closing the bag

Place the manure-filled bag back into the manure container and screw the lid shut.

Can't close the container? Then it's too full.

Return bag

Place the manure container in the return bag and press the sealing strip firmly closed.

Did you order with postage included? Then you can simply drop the return envelope in the mailbox. Did you order without postage? Then you must add postage yourself before sending the return envelope.

Result

You will receive the result in your inbox no later than 24 hours after the laboratory has received the manure sample.

The result is also easy to view in the account section of our website!

Tips

  • Have the manure rechecked after deworming
We recommend sending a manure sample 14 days after administering the deworming treatment, so we can check if the treatment was effective and no resistance has developed. You will always receive a reminder for follow-up testing.

  • Prevent pasture contamination by conducting manure research
If your horse is not on the pasture all year round, it is advisable to perform manure research before letting the horses onto the pasture. This helps prevent contamination of the pasture and your horse(s) getting infected after the manure research. If your horse is on the pasture year-round, we recommend performing manure research between mid-March and mid-April.

  • Perform manure examinations simultaneously for large groups of horses
We advise that for large groups of horses (boarding, trading, or training stables), manure research is performed on all horses at the same time. This provides insight into worm contamination on your stable. For stables, we have created a unique and cost-effective stable package. On the 'Stables and Veterinarians' page, you can find more information. Feel free to contact us for tailored advice.

Working preventively

Prevention is always better than cure. To avoid worm infections, it is very important to work preventively. Horses defecate in the pasture, and their manure contains worm eggs from which larvae hatch. These larvae settle on the tips of the grass and are ingested by the horse, causing infection. Therefore, one of the most important tasks to prevent infection is to remove manure piles from the pasture.

To work as preventively as possible against worms, we recommend following these 8 tips:

  • Remove manure piles from the pasture or paddock at least twice a week
  • After deworming, do not immediately move your horse to a new pasture. Instead, keep your horse on the old pasture for a few days so that dewormed horses ingest non-resistant larvae from the pasture. This helps dilute the resistant worms.
  • Regularly move horses to a clean piece of land or use strip grazing. This prevents horses from grazing near contaminated manure.
  • Perform manure research before moving the horses to a new pasture. This ensures the fresh pasture is not contaminated.
  • If a new horse joins your herd, it is essential to first check whether the new horse is infected with worms.
  • Allow other animal species, such as sheep, to graze the pasture. Another option is to mow or harrow the land.
  • Apply a thorough hygiene policy. Keep stables, paddocks, pastures, and water troughs clean.
