Worm testing in alpacas and llamas

Only deworm when necessary

WORM RESEARCH AT WORM&CO

Worm&Co is the expert company specialised in worm research in alpacas and llamas. Studies show that many animals are dewormed unnecessarily. This harms your animal’s health and accelerates the development of worm resistance. To prevent resistance, it is important to perform worm research before deworming.

Worm testing in alpacas and llamas

It is important to carry out worm analysis frequently (4 times per year). This way, you build a clear record and gain insight into your alpaca’s or llama’s susceptibility to worms. In addition, it helps you keep control over your worm management. On this page, you will find tips to keep worm management optimal, prevent worm infections, and reduce infection pressure.

Enter details

On the container you received, there is a label.

Please fill in your email address, the date of dung collection, and the name and age of your alpaca or llama.

Address label

Before you continue: place the enclosed return label over the address label on the front of the seal bag.

It is easiest to do this before you fill the bag with the dung sample.

Bag

Inside the container is a bag. Use this bag to collect fresh dung. Place the bag over your hand so that the dung ends up inside the bag. Close the bag tightly, but do not tie a knot in it.

Closing the bag

Put the bag filled with dung back into the container and close the container tightly.

If the container does not close, it means it is too full.

Return bag

Place the container in the return bag and press the sealing strip firmly closed.

If you ordered with postage included, you can simply drop the return envelope in the mailbox. If you ordered without postage, you will need to add stamps yourself before sending it back.

Result

You will receive the result in your mailbox within 24 hours after the laboratory has received the dung sample.

The result can also be easily viewed on the account page of our website!

Working preventively

Prevention is always better than cure. To prevent a worm infection, it is therefore very important to work preventively. Alpacas and llamas defecate in the pasture, and their manure contains worm eggs from which larvae hatch. The larvae settle at the tips of the grass and are eaten by the alpaca or llama, causing infection. That is why one of the most important tasks to prevent infection is to remove manure piles from the pasture. To work as effectively as possible in preventing worms, it is smart to follow the following 8 tips:

  • Remove manure from the pasture at least twice a week.
  • Rotate the alpacas and llamas regularly to a clean piece of land or use strip grazing. This prevents the animals from eating grass near contaminated manure.
  • Before moving alpacas and llamas to fresh pasture, it’s wise to carry out a worm examination. This way you ensure the new field does not get contaminated.
  • If a new alpaca or llama joins the herd, it is essential to first check whether the newcomer is infected with worms.
  • Allow other species, such as sheep, to graze the pasture as well. Another option is to mow or top the land.
  • Carry out worm examinations regularly (4 times a year) so a worm infection can be detected in time.
  • Apply good hygiene practices. Keep paddocks, pastures, and water troughs clean.
