Manure research in horses - The EquiSal tapeworm test

Only deworm when necessary

The EquiSal tapeworm test is an innovative saliva test that shows whether your horse has a harmful tapeworm infection.
The test is user-friendly. The saliva can be collected by the horse owner using the supplied swab, which changes colour once enough saliva has been collected. The EquiSal saliva test can be used for all horses.

What is being tested?

The EquiSal tapeworm test measures the amount of specific antibodies against tapeworm.
The test consists of three components, correcting for the horse’s saliva production and diet.

Why choose the EquiSal test?

By using the EquiSal saliva test, you can rule out a tapeworm infection and no longer need to deworm preventively for tapeworm. This prevents your horse from receiving unnecessary medication, helps preserve its natural immunity, and reduces the risk of worm resistance.

Because tapeworms shed their eggs in packets, a fecal test is not suitable for detecting tapeworms. Sometimes tapeworm eggs are found during a regular fecal test, but these are essentially coincidences. The only conclusion you may draw in that case is that the horse does have tapeworms. On the other hand, if no eggs are seen in the feces, we cannot conclude that the horse is free of tapeworms. Due to the way tapeworms release their eggs, there is also no correlation between any eggs found and the severity of infection, unlike with other gastrointestinal worms.
A saliva test, however, can reliably detect tapeworms.

How can I collect a saliva sample?

Your horse must not eat, drink, or perform any work for half an hour before carrying out the test. Write your horse’s name on the tube. Then attach the barcode sticker with your details to the transparent bag.

The manure container you received has a label on it.

Please enter your email address, the date of manure collection, and your horse's name and age.

Address label

Before you continue: stick the included return label over the address label on the front of the seal bag.

It is easier to do this before filling the bag with the manure sample.

Bag

Inside the manure container is a bag. Use this bag to pick up one fresh manure ball. Place the bag over your hand so the manure ends up inside the bag. Twist the bag tightly closed, but do not tie a knot in it.

Closing the bag

Place the manure-filled bag back into the manure container and screw the lid shut.

Can't close the container? Then it's too full.

Return bag

Place the manure container in the return bag and press the sealing strip firmly closed.

Did you order with postage included? Then you can simply drop the return envelope in the mailbox. Did you order without postage? Then you must add postage yourself before sending the return envelope.

Result

You will receive the result in your inbox no later than 24 hours after the laboratory has received the manure sample.

The result is also easy to view in the account section of our website!
